Our First Visitors!

Doug and Dianne came to visit us for 10 whole days! We had a great, fun filled, history packed trip! They spent the first two nights in Cologne and we loved showing them around the city. We walked around, ate at a German restaurant and did an awesome wine and chocolate tasting! It was a great start to the weekend!

The next day we set off for our next stop. We drove the three hours to one of our favorite places, Bruges Belgium. We started with a canal ride, grabbed some Belgium beer and sampled some delicious Belgian chocolate. The next day consisted of a walking tour through Bruges, an awesome brewery tour and a great dinner to end the night.

The following day we made our way to France. 20€ in tolls later, we arrived in Honfleur. It was a cute little port town filled with fish markets, a picturesque habor and all the seafood you could want. We had drinks by the harbor, watched a famous (to Honfleur) artist painting a picture of the harbor (we saw the painting in a store the next day going for 3900€), ate some mussels and accidentally took a French speaking tour through the city. It was a great relaxing two days.

We had two tours lined up for the next couple of days departing out of Bayeux, France which is home to the world famous 1000 year old Bayeux tapestry depicting the story of William the Conquerer. The first one was a half day trip to a few D-Day stops. We went to the Pointe du hoc, Omaha beach, and the American cemetery. It was a very interesting history filled couple of hours. We spent the next day traveling south to tour a beautiful abbey called Mont St. Michel which was built on top of a rock island on the coast of France. Absolutely fantastic place for photos!

Our last stop before heading back to Cologne was to a little town called Ieper, Belgium. Alex and I have traveled here a few times for his work and wanted to show his parents the area. We took a great WWI tour (even got to step inside a still standing German bunker), watched a 100 year old tradition where the city gathers every night/365 days a year to honor the fallen of WWI, and drank some more delicious Belgian beer at our favorite bar in Belgium. Alex and Doug even got challenged by two Belgians to a game of foosball. It didn’t end well 😉.

We ended the vacation back in Cologne. We hopped onto a bus tour around the city, listened to the history of the Dom Cathederal, and got dressed up to watch Germany kick ass in the euro cup. All in all we had a great vacation, ate a lot of great food, drank a lot of good beer and took wayyyy to many pictures (see a few of many below). We can’t wait until they visit us again!
